Children's Dentistry
It is recommended to bring your child to the dentist when the first tooth appears – at around 6 months old. Our dentists will also be happy to share any information regarding your children’s tooth care and any questions you may have to ensure they are doing the best they can to promote healthy oral hygiene.
Here are some oral health care tips for children:
- You can start dental care by gently wiping teeth and gums with a clean cloth. As teeth begin to come through, you can start to use a tooth brush and smear of toothpaste.
- At ages 3-6, you can start using a pea size of toothpaste when brushing.
- At ages 3-4, you can start introducing them to flossing
- At ages 7-8, they should be able to brush their own teeth, however, keep an eye on them to ensure they are using the correct technique and you may want to time them.
- Pay attention to how much sugar your child is consuming through foods and drinks.
- Regular visits to the dentist and developing good oral care at home (including encouraging a healthy diet) will help your child keep these habits as adults
Fissure Sealants:
Fissures are the thin grooves on the chewing surfaces of teeth. No matter how well they are brushed, bacteria can still gather in these grooves and cause decay.
A fissure sealant is a safe plastic coating applied to the tooth to stop bacteria and food from gathering in these grooves. The application is quick and painless and no drilling is involved. Sealants also provide long lasting protection and are invisible once applied.
